La Casona del Son is a fully restored colonial house dating back to 1715, created with the aim of creating a space in the heart of Old Havana where foreigners visiting our country could learn, perfect, and enjoy traditional Cuban dances such as Son, Salsa, Cha-Cha-Cha, Rumba, Rueda de Casino, and Folklore.
Over time and due to demand, we’ve expanded our dance offerings to include Bachata, Kizomba, Reparto, Timba, and Argentine Tango, as well as offering private percussion and Spanish lessons. All in an atmosphere of art, music, and dance.
We have six classrooms equipped to accommodate both individual and group classes. Individual classes offer personalized classes, in which a teacher works with a student based on the student’s level and interests.
In the case of Groups, they are divided according to level: beginner, intermediate, and advanced, and each level has a main teacher and an assistant per person to ensure the best use of the classes.
Our teachers and assistants have extensive experience teaching dance classes, master the techniques of all the dances we offer, and teach classes in both Spanish and English.
We’re open Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., so we can organize courses tailored to your needs and interests. You can choose the schedule, pace, number of classes, and length.
Silvia Canals, originally from Barcelona, Spain, owner and teacher of one of the best dance studios in Havana, La Casona del Son.
She attended various dance, jazz, and ballroom workshops for over eight years in her native Cuba. In Cuba, where she has lived since 2000, she studied Popular Dance at the Teatro América and took several courses at the Compañía Nacional de Folclor, as well as with principal dancer Julio Miñoso of the J.J. She worked in Barcelona teaching dance classes at the Juliá y Eva dance school and has taught salsa and other Cuban dances in Havana for over 15 years. In 2000, she began teaching private salsa classes to foreigners, and founded her own project in 2011.
The school teaches dances such as Salsa, Son, Rumba, Folklore, Cha-cha-cha, Rueda de Casino, Reparto, Bachata, Kizomba, and Tango. She created the methodology used by all the studio’s teachers to teach classes, earning the acclaim of her students.
She has participated in various events and festivals, teaching and dancing choreographies of traditional son, salsa, and ruedas de casino. She has been one of the main organizers of the Ritmo Cuba International Cuban Dance Festival in Havana since 2016.
In 2021, he opened the second location of La Casona del Son, this time in Barcelona, his hometown.
